Banff National Park has always been popular.  It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and a top vacation destination around the world.  In the last ten years, we have seen an increase in visitors to the park.  It is estimated that over 4.5 millions people visit the park each year.  With that comes some challenges, and one of the biggest is transportation.  For many reason, mainly convenience, car is the main transport that people use.  This causes traffic, parking issues, and more animal deaths on the road.  In an effort to decrease the number of cars in the park, Park Canada and his partners are developing alternative options to visit the region.  Here, we give you our best tips to travel Banff National Park.

Hiking or biking

Hiking to Moraine Lake (28-km round trip) is not recommended.  While personal vehicle traffic is restricted along the Moraine Lake road, cyclists will encounter bus traffic. The road is narrow and has no shoulders. We recommend cyclists who wish to avoid traffic riding late in the day. Last shuttle from the lake is at 7h30, so no buses after that, but you may encounter private tour vehicle.  From the turnoff at the 3 km mark of Lake Louise Drive, Moraine Lake Road climbs to spectacular views of Consolation Valley and the Valley of the Ten Peaks. Bike racks are provided at Moraine Lake.

Personal vehicle

Moraine Lake Road is closed to personal vehicles year round. Parks Canada shuttles, Roam Public Transit, and commercial buses are permitted from June to mid-October. Learn more.

Attempting to take your personal vehicle to the Lake Louise Lakeshore is not recommended.

Parking at the Lake Louise Lakeshore is extremely limited and finding a parking spot is challenging throughout the summer months. The lot is full before sunrise and vehicles are turned away when parking lot is full. There is no space to wait for a parking stall to become free. Booking a shuttle ticket in advance ensures you can access this popular destination without disappointment.

Paid parking is in effect at this location during the shuttle season. Visit fee page for pricing.
